2. Main Pain Points

A) Talent Shortage and Insufficient Courses: As Singapore’s smart manufacturing undergoes rapid digital transformation, there is a severe shortage of talent with Industry 4.0 expertise. The existing curriculum cannot meet the talent development needs of the industry.

In 2023, the institution introduced an enterprise-level SMT i4.0 Smartline and launched supporting themed courses, developing an industry-education integration solution featuring the “production line + courses + research” trinity:

A) The enterprise-level SMT i4.0 Smartline was introduced, integrating hardware equipment including CNC machine, SmartBox data acquisition units, zero-point positioning and palletization systems, coordinate measuring machine (CMM), robots, and cleaning systems. It also incorporates software platforms such as the SMT production process assistance system, manufacturing execution system (MES), electronic dashboard system, and digital twin system, forming an integrated intelligent processing system.

B) Courses were developed around core modules related to intelligent production lines, including process management, tooling management, CAM management, integrated design and manufacturing information flow, quality management, workpiece workflow management, production scheduling, equipment energy efficiency management, digital twin process simulation, and production planning and monitoring management.

A) Outstanding Achievements in Talent Development: Students conduct comprehensive learning and hands-on practice on the production line, rapidly mastering core competencies in smart manufacturing. This helps cultivate new engineering talents with strong workplace competitiveness. The related courses are highly popular among students, and the employment rate of the relevant majors has increased significantly, making graduates key recruitment targets for Singapore's manufacturing enterprises.

B) Dual Breakthroughs in Platform and Research: A benchmark smart manufacturing training platform for Singapore's polytechnics has been established. In addition to providing digital support for teaching and research, the institution has carried out a series of smart manufacturing research projects based on the production line, including algorithm development, industrial software development, and digital twin simulation research, continuously enhancing the college's core research competitiveness.
